چکیده

BULLARD, ROBERT W., AND GORDON E. FUNKHOUSER. ES& mated regional blood J-low by rubidium 86 distribution during arousal from hibernahn. Am. J. Physiol. 203(2) : 266-270. I 962 .-The local organ or tissue blood flows during the process of arousal from hibernation have been estimated in the 13-lined ground squirrel by the Sapirstein method, which consists of the measurement of the regional distribution of injected rubidium 86. The studies demonstrated that during arousal there is a confinement of blood flow to the thoracic regions. After the heart rate has attained IOO beats/min, blood flow increases to the anterior portions of the animal. At the arousal level characterized by a heart rate of 200 beats/min, blood flow to anterior and thoracic tissue had attained levels almost equal to control flows. Posterior tissue flows were still much lower than control flows. The centralization of blood flow to thoracic and anterior tissues did not occur in the rat in the hypothermic state. process. Since completion of our studies a report by Johansen (5) has appeared in which fractional distribution of injected rubidium 86 was similarly measured in the arousing and awake arctic ground squirrel (Spermophilus undulatus).

Sympathetic alpha-adrenergic regulation of blood flow and volume in hamsters arousing from hibernation.

Mammals arousing from hibernation display pronounced regional heterothermy, where the thoracic and head regions warm faster than the abdominal and hindlimb regions. We used laser-Doppler flowmetry to measure peripheral hind foot blood flow during hibernation and arousal and gamma imaging of technetium-labeled albumin to measure whole blood volume distribution in hamsters arousing from hibernati...

Fluctuation of Brain Tissue Oxygen Partial Pressure: A Biochemical Landmark in the Arctic Ground Squirrel's Spontaneous Arousal

Hibernation in the Arctic Ground Squirrel (AGS) is a regulated, adaptive response to arctic environmental conditions. Problem statement: Regional brain Blood Flow (rCBF) has been observed to increase dramatically during arousal in hibernators. However, the real time dynamic change in PtO2 during arousal has not been studied, we hypothesized that PtO2 is Interdependent of Tbrain and a key compon...

Kidney proteome changes provide evidence for a dynamic metabolism and regional redistribution of plasma proteins during torpor-arousal cycles of hibernation.

Hibernating ground squirrels maintain homeostasis despite extreme physiological challenges. In winter, these circannual hibernators fast for months while cycling between prolonged periods of low blood flow and body temperature, known as torpor, and short interbout arousals (IBA), where more typical mammalian parameters are rapidly restored. Here we examined the kidney proteome for changes that ...

The kidney during hibernation and arousal from hibernation. A natural model of organ preservation during cold ischaemia and reperfusion.

BACKGROUND During hibernation the kidney is in a hypothermic condition where renal blood flow is minimal and urine production is much reduced. Periodical arousal from hibernation is associated with kidney reperfusion at increasing body temperature, and restored urine production rate. METHODS To assess the degree of structural preservation during such extreme conditions, the kidney cortex was ...
